BDL Artist-In-Residence, Spring 2018

Francisco Graciano (Photographer)

I began photographing while I was a dancer in the world renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company. The drama of the events in the wings can be so compelling they rival the virtuosity on stage. This curiosity turned into an obsession for capturing the most vulnerable moments in the dimly lit wings. From there my camera made its way into the rehearsal studio and outdoors when I was on tour with Taylor. I have an endless fascination with witnessing the transition of fabulous dancer and real life superhero lost in their performance to mortal human in the wings. After giving everything to a performance the vulnerability and rawness of the human spirit is manifested the way the dancer walks and breathes. I couldn’t help but be mystified by this duality in each of my peers. It’s been a privilege to see my work published in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Dance Teacher, and Ballet Review. In addition I’ve shown work in The Harding Gallery in San Francisco and the Furman Gallery in New York. This summer I’ll be exhibiting an archive of backstage photography at the Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center in the Furman Gallery.
